Natural Revelation

Thick roots, those deep anchor-feet of trees,
the thatched mouths through which they may relieve
a thirst entrenched in drought, an arid seige.

Between the throes of these men may believe
Themselves discovered, their souls uncovered
or, if covered, still, at least inspired to live
free, for a time, from ritual-ridden clays that smother
their living roots, thinly hidden in shallow graves.

For we shall live our days in waves,
from crest to crest, from shore to shore,
from joy to strife, from love to toil,
our tides advance, recede, revealing soils
of truth within; we most desire
that that within us sees the light of day,
a month of may, before the soul retire,
that we may breathe, and have our essence breathed,
our pains and passions sung upon th'Orphean lyre.

I say again, that which drives and motivates the race
of all humanity, with its laughing, weeping face,
is hope that one day sunlight grace our deep within
and darkness never shroud our inner selves again.
